June 28 : The Czech Republic has entered the quarterfinals of Euro Cup 2020 by defeating the Netherlands. The Czechs beat the 10-man Netherlands 2-0 in a match at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday. Tomas Holes and Patrick Sick scored for the Czechs.
The Czechs, who finished third in Group D and reached the last 16, beat the Netherlands, who won all three games in Group C.
The Czechs will now play Denmark in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands are out after the defeat.
The Czech Republic scored two goals in the second half of the match which ended in a draw in the first half. In the 55th minute, Mathis de Ligt of the Netherlands received a red card and Czech scored two goals.
Before that, the Netherlands had lost a beautiful opportunity to score in the 52nd minute. The Netherlands’ Donnell Malone missed a goal in the One Versus One.
In the 55th minute, Mathis de Ligt was sent off for a red card and the Netherlands were reduced to 10 men. De Ligt was shown a red card after the VR review for handling the ball.
The Czechs benefited from the loss of one player from the Netherlands. In the 68th minute, Tomas Holes took the lead through a header from a Tomas Klass pass.
Patrick Sick doubled the lead in the 80th minute. He scored the first goal on a cross of holes. This is Sik’s fourth goal in the ongoing Euro Cup.
The Czechs, who reached the quarterfinals in 2012 during the 16-team Euro Cup, have reached the quarterfinals for the first time since then. The Czechs beat the Netherlands 3-2 in the 2004 group stage.
