A 76-year-old man considered the head of the world’s largest family has died in the Indian state of Mizoram.
Giona Chana, head of a polygamous religious sect, died Sunday.
He has 38 wives, 89 children and 36 grandchildren.
Mizoram Chief Minister Joram Thanga took to Twitter to express his condolences. Chana had problems with diabetes and high blood pressure.
Doctors told PTI that Chana’s health had deteriorated at her home and she was brought to the hospital in a dead condition on Sunday evening.
It is not undisputed that Chana’s family is the largest because other people have also claimed that his family is the largest.
Similarly, it is not easy to ascertain the exact number of Chana’s family.
According to a report, he has 38 wives, 94 children, 33 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Local media reported that the largest family in the world had a world record, but its authenticity has not been confirmed.
Local media have reported that the family appeared twice on the TV show “Reply Believe It or Not”.
Whether or not it is a world record, Chana’s family has made India’s northeastern village a tourist attraction.
Chana’s happy life has also got a lot of space in the media.
The family lives in a 100-room house. According to local media, his wives sleep together in a large room next to Chana’s bedroom.
Tourists from all over the world come to see the house.
According to Reuters, Chana was born in 1945 and met his first wife, three years his senior, at the age of 17.
The family belongs to the Chana Paul sect of Christianity with 2,000 followers.
All the followers of that sect live in a village 55 kilometers away from the capital of Mizoram.
This sect, which accepts polygamy for men, was founded in 1942 by Chana’s grandfather.
