Mehul Chaukasi, a diamond trader who became a singer after embezzling Rs 14,000 crore from Punjab National Bank of India, has been caught in Dominica. Mehul Choksi, who fled India and settled in the Caribbean country of Antigua, fled the country after Antigua threatened to extradite him to India. He was captured by Dominica while fleeing to Cuba by sea.
The Indian Investigation Agency is excited that the possibility of bringing him to India has increased as soon as he is caught in the middle of vigilance. Mehul has Antigua citizenship, so it was difficult to extradite him to India. However, if he is caught fleeing to Dominica, it may be easier to extradite him because he does not have Dominican citizenship and under international law, Dominica can extradite him to his own country.
Mehul also has Indian citizenship and is likely to be extradited to India as he fled the country after committing a crime. The Antigua government has also asked the Dominican government to extradite him to India. Dominica could extradite Mehul to India as Interpol has issued a red corner notice against him. However, Dominica could be handed over to Antigua if there are any legal issues.
